Ashfield resident and local sporting hero, Ollie Hynd, won the Achievement of the Year Award and Glenn Smith was named Performance Coach of the Year for the 3rd time (recipient in 2006, 2009 and 2012).  Ollie says he is delighted with the award, which recognises his outstanding swimming achievements in the pool at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

“It’s always a thrill to win a medal on an international level representing my country but it’s also incredibly humbling to be honoured by my local peers. Whenever I get into the swimming pool I’m not just swimming for Britain, I’m competing for Ashfield & Mansfield and Nottinghamshire as well.”

Ollie is a Mansfield/Nova Centurion Squad swimmer supported by Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. The awards, organised by Nottinghamshire County Council, took place last night (12 February) at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham.

Ollie is coached by Mansfield District Council’s Swimming Development Officer, Glenn Smith, who has an excellent track record of coaching swimmers to Olympic and Paralympic glory. Glenn successfully coached Ollie Hynd to secure Gold, Silver and Bronze at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Fellow 2012 Paralympic Silver medallist Charlotte Henshaw, who was nominated for the Disabled Sports Person of the Year category, is also coached by Glenn.

His guidance and support saw Sam Hynd achieve Paralympic Gold at the Beijing Games in 2008. He also trained Olympic medallist Rebecca Adlington during her early development years.  Glenn commented: “I’m very honoured to have received this award, especially as I was amongst some other outstanding coaches who were also nominated for this recognition. It’s also a real privilege to have won the award for a third time!”  Glenn also joined Team GB at the London Paralympic Games as an official member of the coaching staff. He has been coaching in Mansfield for the past 16 years.
