Cowens: Real crime in a virtual world (cyber security)

15 June, 8:00 am - 11:00 am

Information is a valuable commodity in the fight against cyber crime.  You are invited to a FREE seminar presented by “ethical hackers”.  These will make you aware of the risks you may be taking and how you can protect yourself.

Cyber crime used to be a rarity.  However, these days, the new breed of highly sophisticated criminal makes the swiping of data tapes seem almost quaint.  With the ‘age of Big Data’ upon us, ransomware and hacktivism pose a disturbing threat.  Businesses therefore need to maximise their defences and stop treating cyber threats as an emerging risk.

The presentation by “ethical hackers” will make you aware of the risks you may be taking and how you can protect yourself.  This will then be followed by a cyber insurance expert, explaining the risks you and your employees pose.  Of course, there will also be advice on managing these risks and how insurance can help if all else fails.

Seminar agenda

    • 08:00 – Refreshments and “meet the speakers” opportunity – Breakfast and networking both with our team and the speakers
    • 09:00 – Practical, cyber security – Presented by Scottish Business Resilience Centre Ltd
    • 10:00 – Refreshment break – A quick break with refreshments
    • 10:15 – Where are the risks and how good is your protection? Presented by – Aaron Yates

The presentation line-up

Ethical hackers

The SBRC ethical hackers are senior students at Abertay University studying the Ethical Hacking degree (yes, it’s a real degree!).  They have a keen interest in helping businesses defend themselves from attackers.  Furthermore, they are constantly looking at the techniques used by the hackers so they can learn new ways to defend businesses.  In fact, they conduct regular security tests on computer networks and web applications.  This is so that the owners can understand how to ensure that they are correctly defending themselves and know how to secure their IT infrastructure.

The team are passionate about helping people understand the risks that they face on a daily basis from things like phishing emails, public wifi and social media and how to mitigate those risks.  This presentation will not just include dry systems information and IT jargon, it will be aimed at real-world risks.  Moreover, it will be an entertaining and informative session informing you  of some very common risks people take with your, and their own, data.  Of course, this will be deftly followed by some simple practical remedies.

Cyber security is applicable to all industries, businesses and service processes and several techniques are used in its application.  Furthermore, ignoring this is no longer an option.  2016 was a year of high Data Protection Act fines and the introduction of General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679 EU) (GDPR).  When this comes into force on 25 May 2018, it will only increase the possibility of a fine.

This cyber security seminar introduces cyber security and its dimensions, insider threats and their impacts, possible security solutions and more importantly the various security standards and their benefits to your business.

Aaron Yates

It’s of no surprise that most businesses are now dependent on technology to operate normally.   In order to understand how to reduce the risk presented by modern business technology, we need to know where it stems from.  Aaron will reveal where issues reside within our dependence on technology.  And what must be considered within risk management and cyber insurance to secure your business in the digital age.

Aaron is the Chief Executive at Berea and founded the company in 2010 with a mission to simplify cyber security for businesses.  Coming from a background in broadcasting and digital strategy, it became apparent that many businesses did not have access to the support necessary to reduce risk from escalating levels of technology in the workplace.  Berea now provide a select offering of affordable services that help businesses improve their internal business processes to reduce cyber risk.
