Ingenuity: Doing business online

4 October, 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Nottingham University Logo

A free legal briefing for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire SMEs.  These days, business is increasingly being done online.  With a web presence now considered essential for most businesses – whether a simple website or a full e-commerce operation.  Moreover, when doing business online, a number of important legal issues must be considered.  In short, this session seeks to provide an introduction to those issues.  As a result, businesses will be able to advertise, trade and interact with customers online with confidence.

What’s included?

Within the session, we’ll be looking at:

  • Getting the policies right – the underlying T’s & C’s and privacy policies that all businesses that operate online must have in place.
  • Selling online – the rules that apply in both B2B and B2C contexts.
  • Managing risk – if your web presence includes the ability for third parties to comment, post reviews or otherwise interact, it’s essential that you manage your risk of liability.

Expert speaker

Our speaker is Dr Richard Hyde,
Associate Professor in the University of Nottingham’s School of Law.  In summary, Richard specialises in Contract and Consumer Law.  Prior to becoming an academic, Richard was a Solicitor with Browne Jacobson LLP, where he worked in the commercial litigation team.  Here he helped business clients resolve consumer law issues and provided pre-market advice about new products and advertising campaigns. Richard’s research examines the regulation of both food and advertising & marketing. His book, Regulating Food-borne Illness: Investigation, Control and Enforcement, examines the response to outbreaks of food-borne diseases.  He has advised a number of national regulators and appeared on BBC Rip-off Britain to discuss food labelling matters.
