Work is well under way to create a new focal public space off Ellis Street in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and improvements to the adjacent pedestrianized shopping area.

A planning application detailing the scheme has been recently approved by Ashfield District Council. A funding bid to the European Regional Development Fund has recently been approved (subject to contract). Work on site is expected to commence in spring 2014.

The project aims to provide an attractive environment for the market, public events and community activities and provide opportunities for business and residential development around it.  Identified as a priority on the Kirkby-in-Ashfield masterplan, the project will help to revitalise the town centre and capitalise on an impetus for regeneration, which has been generated by the recent Morrison’s development following the demolition of the old precinct.
