New bid to keep Mansfield’s Purple Flag status flying

Mansfield Town Centre Purple Flag status

Mansfield’s Purple Flag steering group will be highlighting the opening of new restaurants and bars, increases in the number of people enjoying the night time economy, success in a £10k Heritage Lottery bid to assess the Town Mill, and reaching the finals of a national award for community safety projects, as it works to retain Purple Flag status this year.

The findings of a survey set up to ask what people like about the town, how they get there, how safe they feel and where they get information from about events will also be highlighted and used in coming months to shape town centre work. The survey is still ongoing at  and can be completed by following the link.

The work is part of the new application to keep the Purple Flag flying in the town from September. This will involve a full assessment including at least one night time visit by Association of Town and City Management inspectors.

Mansfield was first awarded Purple Flag status – which recognises excellence in the management of town centres at night – in September 2014.  A multi-agency steering group headed by Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID) worked to update and promote the town centre to secure the prestigious award. Physical improvements were carried out, changes made to policing and projects were introduced to increase safety and confidence.

After a successful light touch assessment last year, a new full application now has to be made again.

Mansfield’s Purple Flag steering group involves representatives from Mansfield Association of Licensed Venues, Mansfield BID, Mansfield District Council, Mansfield Community Partnership (formerly MPAC) and the police. Other organisations which contribute to the town centre experience also play a role in the work.

Commenting on this year’s application, Dave Wilson, who is heading the steering group on behalf of Mansfield BID, said: “Significant improvements have been made since our first application two years ago. The increase in businesses in Mansfield and the growing numbers of people coming to enjoy a night out here show that we deserve Purple Flag status and that it is of benefit.

“We encourage everyone to find out more about what Mansfield has to offer at the Mansfield Town Centre website and by following us on Facebook  – and then to come and enjoy it.

“From the outset, town centre businesses have supported us and we hope they will continue to do so as we work towards a new Purple Flag award.”
