Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard is set to be one of the first big hitters to appear at the new Civic Quarter in Mansfield.

Formerly the Lindhurst Rooms within the Civic Centre on Chesterfield Road, the venue has been unused since the previous leaseholders pulled out around two years ago.

Now, a new company, The Civic Quarter, is set to take over the lease of the rooms, which can accommodate around 400 people.

The boxing legend will be appearing at the newly-opened The Civic Quarter on 2nd December, from 6.15pm.

Paul Andrews, from The Civic Quarter, said: “There is nothing quite like this venue in the whole of this area and we’re delighted to be taking on the lease.

“We’ll be carrying out extensive decorating works and putting in a new bar, and we are working with Mansfield District Council to completely recommission the kitchen facilities.

“It’s exciting because this venue used to host all sorts of events, from wedding parties to Christmas dinners, and from conferences to wedding and business shows.

“As you can see from the first major show, this place has potential to put Mansfield firmly on the map”.

Paul Andrews and Diane Doran, co-owners of the multi-award-winning Mansfield Manor Hotel on the outskirts of Carr Bank Park in Mansfield, have been working closely with the council to ensure that the new lease enables a viable future for The Civic Quarter, which could also house a new cafe for council staff who work within the Civic Centre itself.

There had been plans to turn the former venue into offices, but Andrews and Doran’s plans have been welcomed by the council.

Kate Allsop, Mansfield’s executive mayor, said: “These rooms have been crying out to be used so it is fantastic that the new Civic Quarter is going to be there.

“There’s nothing like it in Mansfield, and it is in an ideal location, with car parking too. It’s great to hear about the plans and see a company willing to invest time and energy into this project”.
