In the week before Christmas, a devolution deal document for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire was sent to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark.

The latest version of the deal was approved by a meeting of the leaders of all 19 local authorities across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire following months of work alongside business partners, and business organisations such as the Chamber and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

What difference would a Devolution Deal in the North Midlands make to your business?

Quicker, better decision-making tailored to local need that will create growth and more jobs.

Devolution will hand over control of the key economic levers to help us drive growth and jobs. Local business needs will be the focus rather than national targets. People will be trained in skills that local employers need.

Our roads, rail and bus services will be more joined up with better decision making on the priorities – this will mean less congestion and fewer delays. Development and planning decisions will be speedier and better to allow sites to be brought to market quicker and housing built where it is most needed. There will be improved support for business to thrive with universal access to super-fast broadband.

What benefits would we see?

  • 55,000 new private sector jobs
  • 77,000 extra homes
  • An investment Fund that will drive major local improvements over the next 30 years
  • Skills training that matches the needs of local employers
  • Decision making on roads, rail and bus services will be more joined up with the introduction of single ticketing. This will mean less congestion and fewer delays
  • Development and planning decisions will be speedier and improved to allow housing to be built in the most suitable locations
  • Support for business to thrive with universal access to super-fast broadband
  • Substantially more apprenticeships and improved support to get people back to work

What can you do to help?

We still need everyone to get involved in backing the region and the deal. Speak to your MP and make sure that they are fully behind this push.  If you can support, please email the agreed strategic communications lead on devolution martin.done@nottscc.gov.uk email icon in the first instance with your thoughts.  Your voice is critical in creating the momentum that will help us secure a Devolution Deal for the North Midlands.
