Mansfield’s petanque club will be staging this year’s Home Nations Championship from 9 to 10 August, when up to forty petanque teams from England, Wales and Scotland will gather at Titchfield Park to compete for the coveted title of national team champion.

The club was selected to host this prestigious event, following a visit to Titchfield Park by representatives from the English Petanque Association, who were greatly impressed by the high standard of facilities available at the council-run park, which currently boasts 15 pistes (playing pitches) and the use of a clubhouse.  Established four years ago, the club attracts 55 members of all ages, who play up to five times a week in the summer months and regularly take part in competitions.

Club Secretary Phil Middlemiss, said:  “We are delighted to have been selected to host these championships and look forward to welcoming the 120 competitors and officials to Mansfield in August. This is down to the success of club members and the commitment of Mansfield District Council to provide us with first-class playing facilities and marvellous support.”

Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We are extremely proud that Mansfield’s petanque club has been to chosen to host these championships. The Council has always worked closely with the club to ensure that the playing pitches at Titchfield Park are maintained to a high standard with the result that we now offer some of the best facilities in the country.”
