Business Grants

There are a number of sources of grant funding currently available across Ashfield & Mansfield.  If you are looking for loan or grant support for your business expansion plans, you might find this information on capital schemes useful.  You can find some of the major sources listed below but if you would like to perform a more extensive search, you might find this online tool useful.

We currently operate the following business grant schemes:

Ashfield and Mansfield Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE)

This grant offers businesses taking on a new apprentice up to £1,500.  This is on top of the current National Apprenticeship Service’s (NAS) £1,500 AGE.  The grant will support Ashfield and Mansfield employers who would not otherwise be in a position to recruit an apprentice.  To be eligible, companies need to be an SME (employing less than 250).  The apprentice should also be between 16 and 24 and from either Ashfield or Mansfield.

Ashfield Retail Improvement Grant


The retail element of this scheme aims to encourage a high standard of physical improvements to buildings in retail areas throughout Ashfield.  Grants are available to existing and new retailers wanting to improve either their existing businesses premises or a vacant unit they are moving into.

Under the retail scheme, applicants could receive up to 50% of the total project costs, up to a maximum of £5,000.  Find out more.


A further element of this scheme, offering grants of up to £1,500, is also available.  This market scheme provides support to new start-up market traders moving into the Idlewells Indoor Market.  It also provides up to £500 for new start-up traders looking to locate on the outdoor markets in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield or Hucknall.  Find out more.

Business Rates Relief

Ashfield and Mansfield District Councils will award up to £1,500 of discretionary rate relief in 2015-16 to occupied retail premises with restrictions on eligibility:  View the guidance notes.

If your business is in Ashfield, you can obtain further information or an application form from Business Rates on 01623  457516.

If your business is in Mansfield, you can obtain further information or an application form from Revenues and Benefits on 01623 463162.

Mansfield Business Growth Grant

The Business Growth grant of up to £5,000 is available to established businesses who produce a viable Growth Plan creating at least one full-time job.  Businesses can use this grant both where they need support in developing a Growth Plan and for costs involved in its implementation.

Mansfield Business Start-Up Grant

The Business Start-Up grant of up to £1,000 is available to individuals looking to start a business.  The grant can be used towards start-up costs.  Eligible costs include the purchase of machinery and equipment, business stationery and marketing costs such as advertising and web design.

Mansfield Retail Grants

Vacant shops

This grant is open to independent retailers taking occupation of a retail property that has been vacant for at least three months.  Eligible costs include improvements to premises, fixtures and fittings, rental payments, insurance premiums, advertising and marketing costs.  For further details, view the guidance notes.

Shop front improvements

This scheme provides grants to independent retailers, already occupying premises, wishing to make alterations or repairs to their shop front in order to enhance its appearance.  For further details, view the guidance notes.

Technology Grant Funding – Ebusiness Club

Is your organisation based in either Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire?

The scheme is designed to support businesses in getting the most from their existing technology solutions or with the introduction of new systems and software to assist with the implementation of new digital resources.

Invest to Grow – Derby University

The Invest to Grow programme is designed to support established private sector businesses to innovate, grow and create jobs.

  • Grants or loans – according to the needs of the business – are available for around 30% of the cost of investment to help create long term sustainable job growth. The business has to find at least 70% of the project cost.
  • Minimum award size is £15k, so the minimum project cost is likely to be £50k. Maximum award size is £1m.
  • The programme is aimed at growth sectors such as Transport Equipment Manufacturing, Life Sciences, Construction, Food & Drink Manufacturing, Logistics, Low Carbon, Creative Industries and Visitor Economy.

Grant for Enterprise supports the growth or development of existing micro, small and medium-sized businesses based in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Greater Lincolnshire.

Nottinghamshire Economic Development Capital Fund

The Nottinghamshire Economic Development Capital Fund provides capital grants to businesses to help towards activities that will support jobs and economic growth.

Eligible costs include equipment purchase, new machinery, or other capital investments for expansion purposes, potentially including related land or property investments. You must be able to show how the investment will result in job growth.

Grants from £20,000 upwards are now available. The maximum amount depends on State Aid rules about how much public money can be given to businesses. You should review the guidance carefully in order to review eligibility and the maximum amounts available.

N2 Business Growth Programme

The N2 Business Growth Programme provides grant support to businesses in Nottinghamshire. It addresses the following areas of growth opportunity:

  • In key growth sectors, life sciences, digital content, clean technologies and advanced manufacturing
  • In supporting new high growth businesses, such as spin-out companies and technology-led businesses

This programme focuses on SME growth, although not exclusively.  It is delivered by the University of Nottingham with East Midlands Business Ltd.  Moreover it is supported by the D2N2 LEP, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Chamber of Commerce.
