Business Grants

There are a number of sources of grant funding currently available across Ashfield and Mansfield.  If you are looking for loan or grant support for your business expansion plans, you might find this information on capital schemes useful.  You can find some of the major sources listed below but if you would like to perform a more extensive search, you might find this online tool useful.

We currently operate the following business grant schemes:


Ashfield and Mansfield Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE)

This grant offers businesses taking on a new apprentice up to £1,500.  This is on top of the current National Apprenticeship Service’s (NAS) £1,500 AGE.  The grant will support Ashfield and Mansfield employers who would not otherwise be in a position to recruit an apprentice.  To be eligible, companies need to be an SME (employing less than 250).  The apprentice should also be between 16 and 24 and from either Ashfield or Mansfield.

Business Rates Relief

Your business may be eligible for Small Business Rate Relief  (at 100%) if your property has a rateable value of £12,000 or below.  Indeed, for businesses with a rateable value of between £12,001 and £15,000 may also obtain some relief.  Certain qualification criteria apply.

Business Growth Grant

The Business Growth grant of up to £5,000 is available to established businesses who produce a viable Growth Plan creating at least one full-time job.  Businesses can use this grant both where they need support in developing a Growth Plan and for costs involved in its implementation.  Find out more.

Business Start-Up Grant

The Business Start-Up grant of up to £1,000 is available to individuals looking to start a business.  The grant can be used towards start-up costs.  Eligible costs include the purchase of machinery and equipment, business stationery and marketing costs such as advertising and web design.  Find out more.

Retail Grants

Ashfield markets

Our markets scheme in Ashfield offers grants of up to £1,500.  This grant provides support to new start-up market traders moving into the Idlewells Indoor Market.  It also provides up to £500 for new start-up traders looking to locate on the outdoor markets in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield or Hucknall.  Find out more.

Mansfield market

For new traders on Mansfield market, there could be up to 12 months rent-free.  This initiative is to encourage new traders offering currently under-represented products.  To find out more, contact the markets team on 01623 463733 or visit Mansfield District Council’s website.

Shop front improvements

This grant is for independent retailers, already occupying premises, wishing to make alterations or repairs to their shop front in order to enhance its appearance.  Find out more.

Vacant shops

This grant is open to independent retailers taking occupation of a vacant retail property.  Eligible costs include improvements to premises, fixtures and fittings, rental payments, insurance premiums, advertising and marketing costs.  Find out more.

 Other Grant Schemes that could benefit your business


Technology Grant Funding – Ebusiness Club

Are you looking to invest in technology solutions for your business and in need of grant funding?  This grant supports businesses either in obtaining the most from their existing technology solutions or with the introduction of new systems and software to assist with the implementation of new digital resources.  Find out more.


Invest to Grow – Derby University

The Invest to Grow programme is designed to support established private sector businesses to innovate, grow and create jobs.

  • Grants or loans – according to the needs of the business – are available for around 30% of the cost of investment to help create long term sustainable job growth. The business has to find at least 70% of the project cost.
  • Minimum award size is £15k, so the minimum project cost is likely to be £50k. Maximum award size is £1m.
  • The programme is aimed at growth sectors such as Transport Equipment Manufacturing, Life Sciences, Construction, Food & Drink Manufacturing, Logistics, Low Carbon, Creative Industries and Visitor Economy.

Business Growth Grant – NBV Enterprise Solutions

Looking for help to grow your business?  If so, the NBV Grant for Enterprise could be for you.  The NBV
Grant for Enterprise supports the growth or development of existing micro, small and medium-sized businesses based in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Greater Lincolnshire.  Find out more.


Nottinghamshire Economic Development Capital Fund – Nottinghamshire County Council

The Nottinghamshire Economic Development Capital Fund provides capital grants to businesses to help towards activities supporting jobs and economic growth.  This grant is offered on an annual basis in designated application rounds.  If you would like to register an interest in future funding opportunities or help and support to expand your business, contact Nottinghamshire County Council.

Eligible costs include equipment purchase, new machinery, or other capital investments for expansion purposes, potentially including related land or property investments.  You must be able to show how the investment will result in job growth.

Grants from £20,000 upwards are available. The maximum amount depends on State Aid rules about how much public money can be given to businesses. You should review the guidance carefully in order to review eligibility and the maximum amounts available.  Find out more.


N2 Business Growth Programme – EMB Ltd and The University of Nottingham

The N2 Business Growth Programme provides grant support to businesses in Nottinghamshire. It addresses the following areas of growth opportunity:

  • In key growth sectors, life sciences, digital content, clean technologies and advanced manufacturing
  • In supporting new high growth businesses, such as spin-out companies and technology-led businesses

This programme focuses on SME growth, although not exclusively.  It is delivered by the University of Nottingham with East Midlands Business Ltd.  Moreover it is supported by the D2N2 LEP, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Chamber of Commerce.  Find out more.
