Mansfield Town Centre was a hive of activity yesterday (Sunday 17 November) when more than 8,000 people enjoyed a day of festive activities culminating in the town’s Christmas lights switch on.

During the day families enjoyed arts and crafts workshops provided by Four Seasons Shopping Centre and a Cinderella treasure hunt organised by Mansfield BID.  Children also saw Santa and stars from the Palace Theatre’s Cinderella pantomime as they paraded along Westgate in a fairytale carriage pulled by white unicorns followed by Postman Pat and Jess the Cat and the Four Season’s B:Club mascot Buzz the Bee.  Pleasley Colliery Welfare Band provided festive music for shoppers on Queen Street.

At 3.30pm the main stage show was opened by Mansfield’s Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton, and Youth Mayor Tanna Nita.  The 40 strong Cantamus girls’ choir then entertained the crowds with a selection of traditional and festive songs, followed by an appearance from Postman Pat and Jess the Cat, Santa and the pantomime characters.

More live music was provided by Mansfield’s Ghost Academy who got the crowds singing and dancing along to a set of well-known favourites and Christmas classics.  All the acts then took to the stage for the main switch-on at 4.55pm, which was followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Mansfield District Council’s Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton, said: “I am delighted that so many people turned out to join in the fun at The Big Switch On.  The event is a great way of getting everyone into the Christmas spirit. I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy the lights in Mansfield by doing their Christmas shopping locally and supporting businesses in Mansfield town centre.  I would like to thank the Christmas lights committee, our sponsors and Mansfield District Council staff for all their hard work in putting this festive event together.”

The event is organised by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee, which includes Mansfield District Council, Mansfield BID, Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2 and the Chad, and our supporting partners 6 five 2s Taxis and Bowring Transport.  If you attended The Big Switch On 2013, please help us to improve future events by providing your feedback on the brief evaluation form at www.mansfield.gov.uk/switchon.  If you want to be entered into a prize draw and be in with a chance of winning a £50 Four Seasons Shopping Centre gift card, please complete your full details.  Photos of the event can be seen at www.facebook.com/mymansfielduk
