Ye Olde White Lion Inn: New pub in Mansfield

June 4, 2014 8:01 am

The historic White Lion Yard in Mansfield town centre has been brought back into use as the Ye Olde White Lion Inn pub, which opened its doors on 1 March 2014. Bull Farm couple Heidi Steen and Matthew Bell have taken on the lease of the venue from Mansfield District Council.

White Lion Yard consists of a remarkable collection of sandstone caves and old buildings, including one dating back to Tudor times; the cave that was once used as the cellar room now has a bar and a seating area, with a range of local real ales and ciders available from a number of different micro-breweries. The first floor accommodates a modern lager and wine bar.

Matthew said: “This is our first venture and we are very excited; we were keen to re-create the original concept of a pub as a meeting place, focusing on offering a wide range of social experiences for the local community.  The location and character of White Lion Yard is ideal for that purpose.”

Since opening, the pub has enjoyed a steadily growing clientele encompassing a broad age group range from 18 to 70 years.  Matthew and Heidi have ambitious growth plans which include creating a unique visitor attraction centre in the caves, a traditional tea room and introduction of live bands and children focused activities during school holidays.

The White Lion Yard has previously been a visitors’ centre, a restaurant and a wine bar.  This new business development is a real good news story for the town of Mansfield and the night-time economy, bringing a valuable, historic venue back into use.
