A nation of shopkeepers? The changing face of retail.

Invest Ashfield & Mansfield - The area for growth

Since economist Adam Smith first used this phrase in his Wealth of Nations work, things have definitely changed.  Of course, since that was in 1776, that’s hardly surprising.  In fact, the pace of change seems to have intensified over the last few years, with new technologies and a number of key retailers disappearing from our High Streets.  However, at the same time, there are a number of retailers bucking this trend.  Particularly niche retailers and those offering a wider experience.  Whatever you think the future will hold: increased automation and intelligent systems or more integrated communities to achieve that ever-elusive work/life balance, you need to adapt.  That means understanding your customer and delivering the best value you can.  Whether you are currently in retail, looking to enter or struggling to make ends meet, there’s something to help you.

A new way to shop

Are you looking for the best way to retail your product?  If you can’t face standing outdoors in all weathers on the outdoor market but equally can’t stretch to shop premises, another way is at hand.  The newly refurbished Idlewells indoor market not only benefits from a light and airy atmosphere but it also offers good passing trade due to other established traders within the market.  Furthermore, there is a good range of stalls currently available, including non-food retail, food retail and food catering units.  These vary in size from 9.96 sqm (140 sqft) to 27.38 sqm (2,974 sqft) with rents available from £5,466 to £16,793.  What’s more, you can benefit from our markets grant and other incentives such as reduced rent may also be available.

To find out more or to arrange a viewing, please contact WA Barnes on 01623 554084 or email on sales@wabarnes.co.uk.  The indoor market is open on weekdays from 9 to 5 and Saturdays 8:30 to 5 with viewings available at any reasonable time.  Moreover, the Idlewells shopping centre is open Monday to Saturday from 8 to 6 and Sunday from 10 to 4.

A new way to search

If you are looking for shop premises, or in fact any kind of commercial premises, we can also help.  Not only do we offer a free and confidential property search facility but we also offer vacant shops grants and shop front improvements grants.  Read more about all our grants.

We have recently improved our online commercial property search facility to improve our customers’ experience.  If you prefer the personal touch, we are always on hand to help.  Just fill in our contact form or give us a call.

Great British High Streets

There’s also a new way to celebrate the success that we do have on our High Streets.  A new competition has recently been launched together with a High Streets Week between 16 and 22 July.  Moreover, entrants to the awards are in with a chance to win up to £10,000 to spend on their community, plus benefit from on-the-ground support and events from the campaign and street teams.  There is also the opportunity for retailers, small businesses and the public to participate in a ‘spend and win’ competition supported by Visa (the lead sponsor).  But don’t delay, the deadline for entering the awards is 15 August.  Find out more.
