As part of an overarching Regeneration Strategy for Sutton Town Centre, Ashfield District Council is beginning a series of consultation events with local traders, stakeholders and the general public.

The consultation aims to showcase our ambitious plans to reinvigorate Sutton Town Centre, starting with proposals to relocate the Outdoor market to Portland Square. This will be the catalyst for a number of regeneration schemes which are proposed for Sutton Town Centre including:

  • Short stay car park on the existing market place and improved public realm
  • A Conservation Area around the existing outdoor market place
  • Commercial development and improved accessibility and movement for the area around Fox Street

In this first phase, the Council is proposing to move the outdoor market from its existing location to Portland Square, using demountable stalls which will be removed on non-market days.

This will allow for the existing outdoor market site to be transformed into a short stay car park with further public realm improvements suggested for the future, providing the opportunity for the car park on New Street to be amended allowing for long-stay parking within the town centre.

The Council will be holding the following events to consult with the public on these proposals:

  • Friday 5 December, 9am – 5pm – a stand will be located (next to Café Masarella’s) in the Idlewells Shopping Centre, where people can come along to find out more and complete a questionnaire.
  • Tuesday 16 December, from 5.30pm at Princess Suite at Sutton Community Academy – public meeting for the general public and stakeholders to attend.
