Historic Mansfield Building

A property developer is hoping to breathe new life into a historic Mansfield town centre building.

Richard Burns of ARBA Developments recently acquired the former Lloyds Bank building at 2-8 Stockwell Gate.

Dating from around 1830, the property has been empty since Lloyds closed the branch several years ago.

After refurbishing the interior, Burns is hoping to turn the ground floor into shops, with the remaining floors turned into office space, complete with separate entrance.

Burns said: “I’ve walked past this empty building numerous times and have often thought that we could breathe new life into the property by attracting a regional or national retailer into the ground floor space.

“We bought the property from Lloyds Bank and we also successfully applied for change of use from a bank to retail. We are working closely with the council on how best to do this, particularly as the property is in a conservation area.”

Burns says that while the property looks satisfactory on the outside, the interior of the building is in poor condition, with dry and wet rot both having a detrimental impact.

Liam Bentley, a project manager at Mansfield-based Tanbry Construction, hopes that work can start on the site in early December.

Bentley said: “We have assessed the building and, like many that are simply left unused for years, it does need some work, including structural work. When completed though, it will be an asset for the town centre, particularly if a large retailer is attracted to it.”
