EMCC: Construction & property forum
4 December, 2018, 8:30 am - 10:00 am
The Chamber’s Construction and Property forum is for businesses in the construction and property sector to come together and discuss a range of sector specific topics. Typically, this spans topics such as best practice, the latest technological developments, economic environment, sustainable construction and employability & skills. The forum also affords delegates the opportunity to network with like-minded businesses and feed back areas of opportunity and concern.
What’s on offer?
For the final Construction and Property Forum of 2018, we are pleased to be hosted by Futures Housing Group. This organisation, amongst many other things, provides around 9,100 affordable home homes to rent and buy in the East Midlands. In particular, in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Northants.
The Agenda
- Registration, refreshments and networking
- Welcome from Futures Housing Group.  Marcus Keys, Group Director of Business Growth & Transformation and Darren Turner, Business Transformation Manager will provide an overview and update of operations including:
- Update on Housing sector & green paper – including Futures’ view;
- Working with partners – focusing especially on land finding and the push from Homes England for Futures to acquire its own land;
- Update on Transformation – its role in Futures, process-mapping and some quick wins;
- Building the future of construction – where next for the construction sector?  Jonathan Holmes, Director, RSM UK
Jonathan will be discussing the opportunities and the challenges in the sector currently. And what we expect to see in the future. This will include some of the current, key financial topics which include: reverse charges; making tax digital and research & development tax opportunities. - Transition towards a low carbon economy: regional clean growth and skills agenda.  Dr Fred Paterson and Dr Polina Baranova, University of Derby
We will hear about the regional outlook on energy efficiency and growth of the green/clean economy. Then we will explore the skills required to support sustainability transformation in the region. This will look at skills shortages, particularly in relation to the growing demand for ‘green’ skills in the region. As part of the University’s green skills development strategies, they will outline the major shortages, ask for sector specific solutions and discuss the skills that sustainability professionals need/lack. And, most importantly, how we can work together bridge the skills gap. - HR and Employment Law Round-up for the Construction and Property Sector– Rhys Wyborn, Partner, Geldards LLP
Covering a number of interesting cases, plus developments around worker status and the IR35 tax legislation. In short, this is designed to combat tax avoidance by workers supplying their services to clients via an intermediary.
