Ingenuity: Standing Out While Fitting in – The Recognition of Creative Business Ideas

22 January, 7:45 am - 9:30 am

Nottingham University Logo

Have you ever shared what you thought was a brilliant creative idea and then found the response totally underwhelming? Only to feel frustrated when later someone presents exactly the same creative idea and gets the credit?

What’s on offer?

A FREE breakfast event.  University expert, Rachael Lamb shares her research into how we evaluate creative ideas and how these gain acceptance.  Furthermore, this research explores why we’ll always recognise some business ideas but not others.  Sharing stories from her own fieldwork and research, Rachael shows how who and what we recognise as creative is influenced by our individual and collective beliefs about what is legitimate.  She’ll also share how the recognition of creativity is a ‘re-cognition’; as we ‘recall to mind’ whether an idea fits with our existing social norms as we evaluate it. Plus, she’ll share simple social strategies any business owner can use to help gain more acceptance for their ideas and overcome resistance.  Particularly for ideas which are novel or go against the status quo.

Expert speaker

Rachel Lamb – Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Haydn Green Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Nottingham University Business School

Assistant Professor Rachael Lamb will lead this session.  Rachael worked for twenty years in business before joining the University.  She therefore understands first-hand the common challenges SMEs face in growing their companies.

Rachael’s research explores how we recognise creative ideas and how these gain legitimacy in business.  Her most recent project examines how pressure to deliver current products and services influences the ability of companies to recognise emerging ideas.  Rachael teaches Innovation Management and Entrepreneurial Creativity at the University of Nottingham and has worked on innovation projects with SMEs and with organisations such as Waitrose, Rolls-Royce and the National Health Service.

Further information and registration

The European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 is part-funding this event which forms part of the Enabling Innovation Programme.  While this event is classed as State Aid to participating businesses, the value of which is £100, we deliver this completely free of charge to participants.

The Shop Window is your chance to take the floor to make a brief presentation to the room about something you are looking for help with.

From a business?  Sorry, but the Shop Window isn’t the time for a “60 second pitch”.  Feedback from our network members tells us that our businesses want something different from Ingenuity.  But it is your opportunity to do some research of your own: request volunteers for new product or service trials, even ask if anyone has any recommendations for difficult-to-find suppliers.  Or simply share some news that the audience might not find out about otherwise.

From the University?  If you have a business-facing project or want to work with local small and medium-sized businesses as part of your research, this is your opportunity to make contact with business owners.  Our network members already have an interest in what happens at the University and may be interested in participating with your initiative.

If you would like to participate in the Shop Window, just drop us a line.

Please note that the venue for this event is the Sir Colin Campbell Building, Triumph Road, Nottingham, NG7 2TU on the Jubilee campus.  View on Google Maps.

While this is a FREE event, spaces are limited.  So don’t delay, book your place today.  If you have any questions about registering for this event, please contact Georgia Ames.
