The Big House: Prepare for a Pop-Up – Marketing and Promotion

Are you a designer or maker from the creative or digital industries with products or services to sell?  If so, this could prove a really interesting and informative event for you.  What’s more, it forms part of a totally FREE series of four workshops.

Who is it for?

This event is for designers or makers from the creative or digital industries with products or services to sell.  In fact, any designer, maker, potter, artist, photographer or developer who wants to sell their products and services at trade fairs and craft markets.  Also suitable for those who want to run a pop-up shop to test demand for their business idea.

What’s on offer?

A series of four, 3-hour workshops designed to prepare you for setting up a pop-up shop or market stall.  From here you will be able to sell your wares to both new and existing customers.

This series of four workshops is designed to help you promote your business, engage potential customers and make the most of retail opportunities.  Plus, there is an independent research task for you to explore your business in more detail.

The series has been designed by, and includes contributions from, experienced independent businesses who regularly sell their products and services.

In short, each workshop builds your knowledge and gives you the confidence to pop-up in public.  At the end of the series there is an opportunity to take part in a pop-up shop at THiNK, Cobden Chambers.  You will then be able to put your new knowledge to the test in a fun and welcoming environment.

Each session follows a theme, as follows:

Week 1: Monday 17 September – Getting started: What you need to know about trading

  • Describing your product or service to others
  • Practical issues including legal, tax, simple book-keeping
  • Action planning for a pop-up

Week 2: Monday 24 September – Marketing and Promotion

  • Free or cheap methods you can use
  • Getting started with social media
  • Photographing your products and using images
  • Outlining your marketing strategy – focusing particularly on driving footfall to your pop-up

Week 3: Monday 1 October – Pricing Methods and Tips

  • How to price products/services relative to costs and context
  • Pricing strategies including offers and bundling

Week 4: Monday 8 October – Engaging Customers

  • Display and selling techniques
  • Using space creatively and effectively
  • Talking to customers
  • Building contact

These workshops are taking place from 6-9pm, every Monday for four weeks at THiNK, Cobden Chambers in Nottingham city centre.  There is also an independent research task to complete outside of the workshop hours.  The group pop-up event for this series will take place on the weekend of 2-4 November 2018 .

Please note that you must attend all four sessions in the series.  However, if you are unable to do so, please email us directly. Please register for each workshop separately.

The Big House offers fully-funded business support, mentoring sessions, workshops, networking events and access to grants for creative and digital businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.  Find out more.

As this event is part of a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) initiative, you need to enrol in The Big House Programme before attending.  If you are not already enrolled, you will find the appropriate form here.  Please download and complete the form and bring it with you to the event, as it will be required when signing in.
