Mansfield has scooped a Silver-Gilt medal in the Cities category at the prestigious East Midlands in Bloom ceremony held at the Grand Central in Skegness yesterday (11 September).

East Midlands' In Bloom judging

Judges from the East Midlands in Bloom committee visited the Mansfield District in July and were given tour of the District’s parks and open spaces, including Mansfield’s Green Flag award winning Titchfield and Carr Bank Parks, as well as the many and varied floral displays in the town centre. The judges were also taken to Asquith Primary School where pupils led them around numerous planting projects on the school grounds.

The judges were given a special In Bloom Portfolio which detailed a large variety of activities that have taken place over the past year thanks to the friends of the parks, community groups and local nature reserves. The judges also assessed nature conservation, sustainability, permanent planting, cleanliness and environmental issues within the District.

They were impressed with notable improvements within the parks visited which included herbaceous planting, planters and seating. Community involvement was highly commended, with a special mention to the friends groups that were met on the day, St Edmunds Community Orchard, The Appin Road Group and Asquith School. Other areas mentioned included the Little Roots Allotment Project in Mansfield Woodhouse.

Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “I am proud that Mansfield has won Silver Gilt and the cities category of the East Midlands in Bloom competition and have improved on last year’s silver award in the small cities category. Our thoughts now turn to the Britain in Bloom awards next year.”

“Bloom is a real community project and my thanks go to our marvellous parks’ department staff, who have worked tirelessly for months with members of local businesses, school and community groups to ensure the District has been seen at its very best.”
