Shop front grant boost for Campbell’s Bakery

Warsop couple, Colin and Sandra Campbell, have been running a successful bakery business for three decades.  As a result of our shop front grant, they were recently able to give their shop front a revamp.

For cake-loving Colin and Sandra Campbell, baking is not just a job but their life’s vocation.  They even confess to reading recipe books in bed at night.  The couple decided to go for self-employment after Colin, a trained chef, had been working for Tesco as a bakery manager.

After a generation of trading, Campbell’s Bakery was in need of reinvestment in its fabric and equipment.  This was exactly where we came in – to help the couple with a grant towards their new shop front.

“The old one was dropping to bits,” explained Sandra.  “We have been here for 30 years.  It was therefore time to upgrade the machines and ovens.  So this was an extra expense.  She added: “The new sign cost nearly £2,500.  And we got half of that back from the shop front grant.  In short, we wouldn’t have been able to do that if we had not received this help.”

Start-up grant gets Sean moving

Sean O’Connor was out of work when he had a bad experience with a removals company.  This spurred him on to start his own company which he did with help from a business start-up grant.  They say moving house is the third most stressful thing in life.  But Mansfield businessman Sean O’Connor is on a one-man mission to change all that – possibly even as far as Mars.

After a couple of spells of employment and some time without a job, his entrepreneurial spirit was fired up by a bad experience while moving house.  Sean commented: “I thought: there is no reason why I can’t do this myself – but better,” he said.  He added: “I am really proud of the service we offer.  We try to make moving a happy and exciting occasion – not something stressful.  It just seems that this was something I was born to do.”

And judging by the growth of his business after just two years’ trading, it seems he has certainly succeeded.  He added: ” I should be looking at buying my third vehicle any day now.”  In addition to our grant, Sean received a loan and mentoring from the Prince’s Trust and advice from NBV, an EU-funded business support agency.  Sean’s business, O’Connor & Co. Ltd., was further boosted by a £1,000 business start-up grant, which he used to sign-write his second van.

So what does the future hold for O’Connor & Co.?  There is an immediate goal of becoming the biggest removals firm in the East Midlands but even the sky is no limit to Sean’s ambition.   He added: “Richard Branson, watch out!  You know, in 30 or  40 years, when Earth is colonising Mars… I’ll be doing the removals!”
