Landmark memorial to receive facelift thanks to National Lottery heritage funding

November 30, 2018 12:44 pm

One of Mansfield’s most well-known landmarks, the Market Place’s Bentinck Memorial, is due to have a face-lift. In fact, Mansfield District Council will carry out this work before the end of the year.  This is all thanks to money raised by players of the National Lottery.

This is all part of the Mansfield Townscape Heritage Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).  This will improve key buildings in the town centre after Mansfield District Council successfully bid for nearly £850K worth of HLF grants.

Help for town centre businesses

The project area focuses on parts of Leeming Street, the Market Place and Stockwell Gate.  Indeed, we will shortly be offering businesses in this area free gutter cleaning as part of the project.

From January next year, owners of identified properties within the project area can apply for match-funded grants.  These will be up to 75% toward the cost of property improvements.  However, any such improvements must be in complete sympathy with the building’s heritage.  In fact, anyone currently renting any of these premises should encourage their landlords to apply for these improvement grants.

More about the Mansfield Townscape Heritage Project

This project is pat of the council’s overall vision to regenerate the town centre.  And make the district vibrant and attractive to residents, visitors and businesses looking for a place to invest.

This five-year programme consists of conservation, community engagement and educational events.  Furthermore, delivery partners also include Mansfield BID, Mansfield Museum, Nottinghamshire County Council and Vision West Notts College.

As well as improvements to buildings, the project will also offer work experience opportunities for students and volunteers to learn about conservation and restoration skills.  There should also be plenty of opportunity to be involved in film, story-telling, street theatre, art and photography activities, celebrating efforts to return one of Mansfield’s most elegant shopping streets to its former glory.  Find out more.
