There is a widely acknowledged skills shortage in the logistics sector, with 14% of logistics companies in the East Midlands reporting skills gaps.
Here at Invest Ashfield and Mansfield we understand that there are specific needs to attract more qualified drivers and young people into the sector. We have in place a good local training infrastructure that is helping to address these skills gaps:
- Logistics at Vision West Nottinghamshire College (VWNC)
VWNC’s Kirkby-in-Ashfield campus is home to the East Midlands regional hub of the Logistics Academy, designed to provide quality, industry-relevant training and learning programmes to employers in the logistics sector while helping businesses to up-skill their staff to remain competitive in the current economic climate.
The academy is led by VWNC and Lincolnshire-based Denby Transport Ltd, and run in partnership with businesses, universities, further education colleges and private training suppliers. Support is also provided by Skills for Logistics, the sector skills council for the freight logistics industries.
Specific logistics and warehousing courses and qualifications available at VWNC include:
- Advanced Apprenticeship Logistics Operational Management NVQ 3
- Apprenticeship Warehousing and Storage NVQ 2
- Apprenticeship Driving Goods Vehicle NVQ 2
