‘Summer of Design’

Businesses in Mansfield and the surrounding area are being invited to explore innovations in design as part of an exciting  programme of events run by Nottingham Trent University’s Future Factory project and Nottinghamshire County Council.

Based at Mansfield Central Library, ‘Summer of Design’ provides an opportunity for small and medium sized businesses to explore the latest advances in design which could help them to resolve business design challenges, respond to new opportunities and generate new ideas.

Businesses and would-be designers and entrepreneurs will be able to see new technologies, such as 3D printing, laser cutting and 3D scanners in action, find out more about their potential uses, explore opportunities to innovate and learn some new skills along the way.

Future Factory is a Nottingham Trent University hub which provides support in sustainable design and practice to small and medium sized businesses in the East Midlands. Future Factory is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.

The ‘Summer of Design’ programme will consist of:

  • An Innovation and Design Exhibition
  • Imaginative Design – a launch event with inspiring industry and expert speakers
  • Interactive workshops on themes such as Design Management and Innovation; Design using 3D software; Prototyping with 3D printers and laser cutters
  • A design showcase – innovative local businesses sharing their own experiences and ideas

The ‘Innovation and Design Exhibition’ 31 July – 3 August 2015 will showcase work produced by local Mansfield and Nottinghamshire businesses, Nottingham Trent University students and Future Factory clients. Underpinning the event will be the theme of commercial innovation, coupled with the application of new technologies to help businesses understand their potential, any limitations and see how others are incorporating these into their design practice.

The launch event on 31 July 2015, ‘Imaginative Design – imaginative ways to improve your business’, will introduce inspirational and aspirational speakers sharing their own design and innovation stories and experiences from leading edge developments to small scale innovations. At the event, businesses will also be able to discuss their individual needs and ideas with the Future Factory team, and book onto a series of practical workshops to explore some of the latest developments and approaches.

At the hands-on workshops, participants will have the opportunity to engage first hand in practical activities, discuss emerging issues with practitioners, and experiment and network with like-minded professionals. Ideas with real development potential will be put forward for further work on a one-to-one basis with appropriate design and technical support facilitated by Future Factory and the university.

Lynn Oxborrow, Future Factory Project Director said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to work with the Future Factory team. It will enable us to get to know what drives them and their needs and find out how we may be able to work together in the future to support their growth and innovation.”

Councillor Diana Meale, Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Economic Development Committee says: “Nottinghamshire County Council is delighted to be working with Nottingham Trent University to bring the Summer of Design events to Mansfield to unlock the innovation and creativity within our local manufacturing and engineering based businesses.

“By bringing together businesses, engineers, designers, students and entrepreneurs at a series of practical, hands on events we’re looking forward to showcasing the innovation that exists in our county and the opportunities for businesses to harness new technology like 3D printing and scanning.”

Martin Rigley, Managing Director of Lindhurst Engineering, said:  “I’ve already benefitted from Future Factory and Nottingham Business School support, but this initiative sounds very exciting and I am looking forward to sending some of my team to the Summer of Design events. I also see it as an opportunity for some of our local school and further education students to get involved, benefitting from the new technologies as well as developing links with local businesses and the Nottingham Trent University team.”
