The Mansfield and Ashfield Development Forum invited Professor Joshua Bamfield, Director, Centre for Retail Research to present his views on the future of the retail industry and the impact of online trading on 11th December 2013.

The event was held at the Old Mansfield Library and was well attended by key stakeholders in the local retail sector, including property agents, developers, shop owners and representatives from Ashfield & Mansfield District Councils.  Professor Bamfield’s presentation focused on the tough challenges that the retail industry is currently facing nationwide as a result of a combination of factors including the recession and the growth of online retail sales.

Consumer spending has grown considerably in 2013 but Professor Bamfield indicated that town centres will need to adapt to new shopping habits and build on the public support for high streets – a recent IPSOS MORI poll found that 83% tend to agree or strongly agree that “my local area would be worse off without my High Street”.
