Science without borders

Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) is a Brazilian Government scholarship programme which aims to send 101,000 Brazilian students on undergraduate sandwich courses, PhD sandwich courses and full PhDs to study in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and creative industries at top universities around the world.

The University of Derby has now welcomed several groups of Science without Borders students to the UK and they currently have almost 100 undergraduates in total, working across a number of faculties – with the majority in Art, Design and Technology.

The students are from a number of prestigious Universities across Brazil including the University of Rio and University of Sao Paulo, and will be studying in Derby on the 2nd and 3rd years of their respective course of choice.

The students will have already completed at least two years of study within their host University and have been selected for this scheme based on their academic achievements.

The University of Derby would like to work with local employers to create some work placement opportunities for these students over the summer months; these will be unpaid placements and can also include a research project which can be set by the host business if appropriate.

This may be of benefit to businesses that either have an existing presence in Brazil or for those who may be considering this as a new market in light of Brazil’s growing economy.
What are the benefits to my business by taking on a placement student?
A placement student can:

  • Provide a cost effective source of recruitment
  • Fill a skills gap or vacancy temporarily
  • Offer a resource to work on a specific project or task
  • Introduce you to students with current knowledge and enthusiasm
  • Improve your links with the University, which can provide a range of opportunities to help your business.

When can we take a student and how long are the placements?

Students will be available for placements from the end of May to the start of September – there is flexibility on the length and scope of the placement.

How much do we need to pay the students?

Students do not need to receive a salary or be employed as they will have funding for the duration of their placement.

Will any visa conditions apply for these international students?

No there will be no requirement for a Working Visa as this is part of their studies.

Martin Rigley, Lindhurst Engineering, iAM Cost-effective Figurehead AMbassador has benefited from the program “SWB provides an excellent opportunity for Lindhurst to forge links with UoD and the Brazilian students. The reality for most SMEs is that you have limited resource and many of the strategic thinking projects you’d like to do have to take a back seat to the pressures of the day to day job.

“Not only does SWB give you access to really bright students who with a little guidance can help you work on the “back seat” projects but having someone from a different cultural back ground in my experience brings a fresh and in vocative perspective. Lastly it’s good for team moral to have such bright, enthusiastic young people to interact with.”

How do they recruit the students?

Contact Amy Fletcher ( and discuss your requirements. They can match the students’ skills and areas of interest and ask them to send you a CV and cover letter – you can select and interview the students if you wish.
