The need for lifelong learning is more evident now than ever before. People no longer have jobs for life.  Many people now change career, in addition to employers, during their working life.  That’s exactly where the new SKILLS local programme comes in.  Delivered by Learndirect and funded through the European Social Fund (ESF), this is a £3.5m programme.

What does this  mean?

Basically, this money is available to support over 1,000 local businesses.  The project also includes over £500K to support firms with apprenticeships.  Moreover vocational training will be delivered to 3,525 local employees.

Who is eligible?

This programme is specifically to support SMEs across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.  An SME, or Small to Medium Enterprise, is an independent company which employs fewer than 250 employees.  There are other restrictions on sales and balance sheet amounts.  View the EU definition here.

Since the European funds come through the Local Enterprise Partnership, D2N2, this training specifically targets firms in their priority sectors.  These are as follows:

  • Health and social care
  • Engineering
  • Food and drink manufacturing
  • Transport and logistics
  • Medicine and bio-science
  • Visitor economy
  • Low carbon goods and services
  • Transport equipment and manufacturing

Finally, the employees themselves must be at least 19 years old.

How could this improve your business?

Accessing this funded training could help to upskill your staff, boost productivity and improve  staff retention.  Not only that, but Learndirect are able to offer the training at times and locations to suit your business, helping to minimise any potential negative impact.  In addition, the accredited training is adapted to the needs of each individual, and paced accordingly, helping them achieve success.  Of course, further progression is entirely possible and you will also be made aware of other business support programmes offered through D2N2, which could benefit your business.
