UK Self Employed at and all time high!

Labour Market Statistics show an increase in employment of almost 250,000, meaning that self-employment has topped 4.5 million for the first time in history.

Responding to the news, PCG, the membership organisation for independent professionals, has called on Government to create a level playing field for those in business on their own account.

Simon McVicker, Director of Policy & Public Affairs at PCG, says: “Every time the ONS releases new figures on the labour market, we see that the number of people in business on their own account has gone up significantly.”

Recent research by think-tank, the Resolution Foundation, shows 72% of respondents prefer self-employment to being an employee. According to Simon McVicker, decisive action on the main issues facing self-employed people would see that percentage rise still further.

The CBI commented on the latest official labour market data, showing that employment rose by 239,000 and unemployment fell by 77,000 to 2.24 million in the three months to February 2014.

Meanwhile, Neil Carberry, CBI Director for Employment and Skills, says the newly-released labour market stats were positive, and showed that the flexible jobs market works. “Firms are hiring at a faster pace, the number of people out of work is at a five-year low and the majority of new jobs are full-time.  We’ve always said that as growth picks up more people will feel the benefits. Businesses are creating jobs across all sectors and real wages in the private sector are rising.”
